Re:  Important Information on Modifications to Policy and Procedures Governing Student Conduct

Dear ,

As a campus community with high standards and expectations, Student Affairs strives to sustain an environment that fosters the S&T values of tradition, collaboration, inclusiveness, and excellence. In doing so, I want to bring to your attention important amendments made by the University of Missouri Board of Curators to policies and procedures governing student conduct. Amendments became effective August 1, 2012, and were primarily made in compliance with revised Title IX standards pertaining to institutions of higher education regarding the handling of sexual harassment and sexual violence complaints.

Student conduct policies and procedures contribute to the Missouri S&T mission as well as the student experience as described in the preliminary statements of the revised Standard of Conduct which outlines the minimal expectations of behavior for students. Amended standards pertain to threats of violence, nonconsensual sexual behavior, stalking, harassment, invasion of privacy, and participation in theft.

The revised Rules of Procedures in Student Conduct Matters pertain to the procedural aspects of the conduct process. Amendments provide a complainant, in instances of nonconsensual sexual behavior, with the same rights and opportunities afforded to the alleged student. Additionally, the evidentiary standard of preponderance, more likely than not, is now explicitly specified as opposed to being implied.

As a member of the S&T community, you have the responsibility of being familiar with University standards and policies. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the updated policy and procedures along with other resources to compliment your understanding the S&T community expectations.
